Can human beings rev up their intelligence quotients, or are they stuck with IQs set by their genes at birth? Until recently, nature seemed to be the clear winner over nurture.

Recently, lots of bloggers have been wringing their hands over the implications of genetically-determined differences in intelligence between various racial and ethnic groups. I think they’re getting a bit ahead of themselves – what’s been conspicuously absent from any of these posts is definitive evidence that the premise is correct.

The new paper, by Helmbold, Troche and Rammsayer, indicates that "temporal acuity" may be the reason that such simple reaction time tasks correspond with higher level cognition: the temporal resolution of neuronal processing, rather than its absolute speed, may be the factor that matters.
