The Laughter of a Soul Waking Up

Posted on Jan 1st, 2006 by Ryan : Earthling Ryan
Matt had a wonderful post on Laughter as Spiritual Practice - yesterday my friend Steve pointed out that the Sufis are very big on that too.  I just discovered that a fa vourite quote  is actually from a larger piece by the sufi poet Hafiz.  Enjoy :)

The quote:
What is this precious love and laughter
Budding in our hearts?
It is the glorious sound
Of a soul waking up!

The poem, found here:

Laughter

What is laughter? What is laughter?
It is God waking up! O it is God waking up!
It is the sun poking its sweet head out
From behind a cloud
You have been carrying too long,
Veiling your eyes and heart.

It is Light breaking ground for a great Structure
That is your Real body - called Truth.

It is happiness applauding itself and then taking flight
To embrace everyone and everything in this world.

Laughter is the polestar
Held in the sky by our Beloved,
Who eternally says,

"Yes, dear ones, come this way,
Come this way towards Me and Love!

Come with your tender mouths moving
And your beautiful tongues conducting songs
And with your movements - your magic movements
Of hands and feet and glands and cells - Dancing!

Know that to God's Eye,
All movement is a Wondrous Language,
And Music - such exquisite, wild Music!"

O what is laughter, Hafiz?
What is this precious love and laughter
Budding in our hearts?

It is the glorious sound
Of a soul waking up!

Ryan… wonderful!  And thanks for the reference.  “A soul waking up,” is a great way to put it.  I didn’t know the Sufis were laughers.  I guess it makes perfect sense though since they love to dance.  I think it was Gemma (?) who pointed out that laughter and dance have a lot in common.

Keep the wisdom flowing!

Love it.  And I love the research from Norman Cousins and others about the health benefits of laughter.  I resolve to laugh more in this New Year!!! :)

Funny how laughing til you cry and crying because you’re sad both result in tears. Makes you think about the purpose of tears…to punctuate the happiness and to wash away the pain?

I’m going to try to laugh more, my soul needs the positive energy!!!

There used to be (and probably still are) these “laughing clubs” all over India.  A whole bunch of  people would get together, someone would start the laughing (it’d be really contrived at first)…then everyone was off and laughing…they’d laugh for a whole hour…then go home, and meet again next week. :)

@Scott- I saw a short film like that at a festival- People on a subway. All trying to smother their giggles. Then one by one everyone erupts until the whole subway car is bursting with laughter. Babies, Elderly, all races, buisnessmen, bums. You never know why they are laughing and there are no words. Just a 5 minute film of people laughing. The best 5 minutes I even spent in a movie theater.
